Makassar (Antara) – The South Sulawesi basketball team has confirmed that they will appear in the 2023 National Student Sports Week (Popnas), after being able to reach the finals of Pre-Popnas Region IV in Samarinda, East Kalimantan on September 9-16, 2022.
South Sulawesi Dispora staff Jabal Noor confirmed from Makassar on Friday that the South Sulawesi team still qualified although they had to accept the superiority of East Java in the top team with a final score of 58-66.
“The South Sulawesi basketball team is sure to still qualify even though they lost to East Java in the final and got the second or silver medal,” he said.
He explained, with the success of the South Sulawesi basketball team, it has added sports that can compete in Popnas 2023 in South Sumatra and Bangka Belitung.
Previously, South Sulawesi fielded a men’s takara team, four boxers and five penkak silat athletes to compete in student sports events across Indonesia.
Meanwhile, for South Sulawesi’s ranking in the pre-Popnas 2022 East Kalimantan, a silver donation from basketball could not help South Sulawesi to fifth place among the seven provinces competing in the 2022 Popnas qualifying round.
The South Sulawesi team lost to East Java to top the final standings with 25 gold, five silver and eight bronze medals.
East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) came in second with 9 gold, six silver and one bronze.
The third place is occupied by the hosts from East Kalimantan with a collection of six golds, 20 silvers and six bronzes. Or better than four golds, 5 silvers and two bronzes from West Nusa Tenggara.
Only South Sulawesi is better than the Southeast Sulawesi team with one gold, one silver and five bronzes (position 6) and West Sulawesi is the caretaker of only five bronze medals.
